BOM Best Practices for Mechanical Design: What Should Be Included?

Primary SEO keywords: BOM best practices, bill of materials, mechanical design, manufacturing BOM, CAD BOM

A bill of materials looks like a simple table, but a poor BOM can create purchasing mistakes, missing parts and assembly delays. A good mechanical design BOM should help another person build the product without guessing.

Start With Clear Part Numbers

Every manufactured and purchased component should have a consistent identifier. Avoid using vague names such as “bracket new” or “plate final”.

Descriptions Matter

Use descriptions that distinguish similar parts. Include size, material, finish or standard information when those details are important.

Separate Purchased and Manufactured Items

Bolts, bearings, motors and standard hardware may need different information from fabricated components. Make the BOM useful for procurement as well as production.

Revision Control

A BOM must match the drawing and CAD revision. If the drawing changes but the BOM does not, production can easily build the wrong configuration.

CAD Automation

Modern CAD systems can populate BOM information from model properties. This is powerful, but only if the properties are maintained consistently.

Simple Rule

If a new engineer can open the BOM and understand what needs to be purchased, manufactured and assembled, the BOM is doing its job.
