A professional AutoCAD mechanical drawing should be easy to read, edit and manufacture from. Consistent layers, line types and dimensions are essential for clear technical documentation.
Use a Logical Layer Structure
Separate object types into logical layers. Typical layers may include object lines, hidden lines, centerlines, dimensions, construction geometry and text. The exact naming standard should match your company’s drawing system.
Line Types
Continuous lines are commonly used for visible geometry, dashed lines for hidden features and centerline patterns for axes and symmetry. Keep line appearance consistent across the drawing.
Centerlines Matter
Centerlines communicate axes of holes, shafts and symmetric features. They are especially important for manufacturing and inspection.
Dimension Placement
Place dimensions so they can be read without crossing unnecessary geometry. Avoid duplicate dimensions and avoid using dimensions as decoration.
Use Appropriate Symbols
Mechanical drawings may contain diameter, radius, depth, angle, surface-finish and GD&T symbols. Use standardized symbols appropriate to the drawing system used by your organization.
Drawing Scale and Units
Set the drawing units correctly and clearly identify the unit system in the title block or drawing notes. Do not rely on the displayed scale for manufacturing dimensions.
Title Block and Revision Control
The title block should identify the part, drawing number, material where applicable, scale, units, author or checker and revision information. Revision control prevents outdated drawings from reaching production.
CAD Cleanup
Before release, remove unnecessary construction geometry, check duplicate objects, verify dimensions and review plotted output. A drawing that looks correct on screen can still fail when printed or exported.
Consistent mechanical drafting standards make collaboration easier between designers, manufacturers, inspectors and project teams.
