Sheet Metal Bend Relief Explained: Prevent Cracks and Distortion

Primary SEO keywords: sheet metal bend relief, sheet metal design, bend cracking, SolidWorks sheet metal

Sheet metal parts often fail for a surprisingly small reason: the bend was designed without enough relief. Bend relief gives the material room to deform and can prevent tearing near the end of a bend.

Why Bend Relief Is Needed

When a sheet is bent, material around the bend zone stretches and compresses. At a corner where two bends meet, that deformation can become concentrated.

Common Relief Approaches

Rectangular, tear and obround-style reliefs are common approaches. The right geometry depends on material, thickness, tooling and the shape of the finished part.

Do Not Copy One Rule

There is no single relief size that works for every shop. Your press brake tooling and material supplier may have preferred values. Use those manufacturing limits when available.

CAD Workflow

In SolidWorks or another sheet metal CAD system, create the relief as part of the actual bend feature rather than drawing a flat pattern by hand. Then inspect the developed shape.

Final Check

Look closely at every bend intersection, especially corners that will be visible or carry load. Small relief changes can make a big difference in fabrication quality.
